Donalyn Miller, a seasoned 6th grade Language Arts teacher and educational author, wrote The Book Whisperer: Awakening the Inner Reader in Every Child in 2009. Miller's text explains how she fostered life-long readers by getting her students to read more books, on their individual reading level, through a challenge to read 40 books in a school year. Direct instruction of literacy skills is supported through the use of student-selected text.
